Extreme Day Trip Calculator: How Long Will You Really Have in the City?

A return flight can leave a long gap on paper. Enter the flight times and the time you need to reach the centre and get back. See the hours you can actually spend there.

Plan your day

Example times are filled in below. Replace them with your own itinerary; all times are local to the destination.

Flights and destination

Use the arrival and return departure times on your itinerary in the destination’s local time, on the same calendar day. Changes of time zone and daylight saving are already reflected in those local times.

Time outside the city

Adjust these estimates for border control, queues, your transfer, terminal and airline. A delayed outbound flight could shorten the day further.

What does “usable time” mean?

This is the time between reaching the city centre and leaving it to return to the airport. The calculator subtracts arrival formalities, travel into town, the journey back and the airport time you choose before departure. It does not search or book flights, predict delays or check entry requirements.

For example, landing at 09:30 and departing at 21:00 gives 11½ hours between flights. With the example allowances above, it becomes 7 hours 35 minutes in the centre. A cheaper fare can be a poor deal if the airport is far away or the return flight forces you out of the city early.
