When choosing somewhere to stay for Venice, location deserves a closer look than the hotel name alone. We stayed at Crowne Plaza Venice East – Quarto d’Altino, an IHG-branded hotel on the mainland, outside Venice’s historic island centre.
Our experience was positive overall. I liked the welcoming lobby, friendly staff, spacious family accommodation and food. The nearby railway station was a particular advantage. The main frustration came before check-in: a flight delay meant we could not use the airport shuttle we had arranged.

Location: a mainland base, rather than a hotel in historic Venice
The hotel is in Quarto d’Altino, at Viale della Resistenza 18/20. For us, this meant returning to a quieter neighbourhood after going out to explore. We walked around the surrounding residential area and towards the town centre, where we found shops and a grocery store.
That setting suited us, but it involves a trade-off: you need to travel into Venice rather than step out of the hotel straight onto its canals. If you want evenings in the historic centre, include the return journey in your plans.
The station is one of the hotel’s biggest advantages
I filmed the walk to Quarto d’Altino station because its proximity was worth showing. It took us only a few minutes, including using the station underpass to reach the platform. The hotel’s official directions describe the station as approximately 250 metres away.
Allow extra time to find the correct platform and buy or validate your ticket as required. A station being close does not mean you should leave your room two minutes before a train departs.
In my spoken review, I estimated the train journey into Venice at around 20–25 minutes. Treat that as my recollection, not a verified timetable. Check your actual service and destination with Trenitalia: Venezia Mestre is on the mainland, whereas Venezia Santa Lucia is the station to choose for the historic city. Add waiting time and any onward walking or boat journey to your overall travel plan.
Despite being close to the railway, I did not notice intrusive train noise inside our hotel during the stay. That is my experience of our room, rather than a guarantee for every room or guest.
First impressions, check-in and staff
The lobby made a good first impression. I found it attractive and welcoming, and the reception team were professional and friendly. We had booked through Booking.com, and check-in involved confirming our reservation and receiving our room key card.
The hotel also replied promptly to our messages through Booking.com when we were dealing with the arrival delay. Although the transfer outcome was disappointing, I appreciated being able to communicate with the team.
Our family room
We stayed in family accommodation that felt spacious enough for us. The room had a television with some English-language channels, a fridge, sachet coffee supplies and milk. The bathroom was pleasant, with towels and toiletries provided, and Wi-Fi was available.
These details describe our room at the time of the visit. Room layouts, beds and equipment can vary by category, so check the exact room you are booking, especially when travelling with children or teenagers. I did not carry out a Wi-Fi speed test or compare every room type.
Breakfast and dinner: both were enjoyable
We enjoyed the buffet breakfast, which offered plenty of choice. Breakfast was served in a separate area from the restaurant where we had dinner.
Dinner was another positive part of the stay. We ordered from a menu, liked the food and found the restaurant service professional. I recorded very little of that meal because we wanted to enjoy dinner without turning the whole evening into content.
Check whether breakfast is included in your chosen rate and budget separately for dinner unless your booking explicitly includes it. I have not supplied current meal prices or a nightly room rate because those were not established in the transcript.
The airport shuttle: useful, but have a backup plan
We had arranged a free airport shuttle, but our flight was delayed. When I contacted the hotel, I was told that our booked transfer could not accommodate the changed arrival time and that a taxi was the alternative.
In the video, I recall being quoted €60 for a taxi option. We eventually arranged an Uber ride, which I remember costing less, although I was uncertain whether it was €40 or €50. Those are recollections from our trip, not current quotes or guaranteed fares, so I would not use them as a precise transfer budget.
My suggestion in the review was that the hotel could offer more help with an affordable alternative when delays disrupt a shuttle booking. That is my view based on our experience; it does not mean the hotel promises a flexible or subsidised replacement transfer.
Who would this hotel suit?
Based on our stay, I would consider it for families and travellers who are happy to use the train and prefer a quieter mainland base. The station access, room space and enjoyable meals were its strongest points for us.
If your priority is being surrounded by historic Venice from morning to late evening, compare it with accommodation in the historic centre. Compare the full cost—including trains and airport transfers—and the time spent travelling, rather than the room rate alone.
My conclusion and key takeaways
We had a good stay at Crowne Plaza Venice East. The staff, family room, breakfast and dinner all left a positive impression, and the nearby station made its mainland location practical for our trip.
The lesson I would carry into another booking is to plan airport transport carefully. A complimentary shuttle is valuable only when its timetable and conditions fit your arrival—and flight delays can change that.
- Understand the location: this is Quarto d’Altino on the mainland, outside historic Venice.
- Use the station advantage: it is a short walk away, but check train times and the correct Venice destination.
- Check your room and meal rate: confirm the family layout and whether breakfast is included.
- Reserve the airport shuttle: confirm the airport, schedule, meeting point and delay arrangements.
- Budget for a backup: do not rely on my remembered transfer prices as current fares.
For our family, the hotel worked well overall. I would recommend considering it if its location and transport arrangements suit the way you want to experience Venice.
